Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of June 13-19, 1996 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 San Francisco Bay Area During the seven-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, June 19, 1996 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 17 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. Two were as large as M2. This total compares to 21 earthquakes during the previous seven-day period (June 6 - June 12), three of which were as large as M2.0. The largest event was an M2.3 event in the Diablo Mountain Range 21 miles west of Los Banos (#1 in figure 1). An M2.1 event occurred 10 miles south of Hollister on the San Andreas Fault (#3/1). Closer to the Bay, the largest event was only an M1.7 earthquake on the Hayward Fault (#2/1). None of these events were reported felt. Northern & Central California The largest earthquake of the week was a M4.4 event in the Gorda Plate under the ocean 43 miles west of Eureka (#8 in figure 2). The Mendocino Fracture Zone produced several earthquakes: an M3.3 on June 18 (#7/2) and several magnitude 2's near the coastline (#3/2). An M2.2 event in the subduction zone (where the North American Plate overrides the Gorda Plate) at a depth of 24 km occurred on June 17 (#5/2). As in the previous week, the Northern Coast Ranges were active and the creeping section of the San Andreas Fault south of the Bay Area was relatively inactive. The largest Coast Range event was M3.2 near Clearlake's Konocti Bay (#6/2) and northeast of the earthquake cluster at the Geysers. Several Other magnitude 2 events occurred the northern Coast Ranges (#1, #2 and #6/2). Long Valley Caldera Two earthquake swarms in the south moat of Long Valley Caldera produced the largest numbers of recorded earthquakes in a single region of Northern California this week. During the week, 150 M1 or larger earthquakes were located in the Long Valley Caldera or adjacent Sierra Nevada block to the south. The first swarm during June 14-17 culminated with magnitude 3's on June 14 and 15 (#3/3). The second swarm on June 19-20 also formed a small earthquake cluster, but was 4 miles east of the earlier swarm. Both swarms saw their heaviest activity on their first day. USA Seismicity (June 11-18) The conterminous lower 48 states saw very light earthquake activity this week just as last week, so the usual USA map is omitted. Instead the map of Alaska shows the continuing aftershocks of the M7.7 Adak earthquake of June 9. Several M5 events occurred and were felt on Adak, but activity is declining (#1). The M4.2 event on June 17 at 7:03 utc was felt in the Cook Inlet region. The Planet Earth (June 11-18) The largest earthquake outside the U.S. was the Mb=6.5 (moment magnitude 7.8) event in the Flores Sea near Indonesia (#4/5). Minor damage occurred at Kupang. Table 1. RMS SEC: is the root mean squared residual misfit for the location is seconds, the lower the better, over 0.3 to 0.5 seconds is getting bad, but this is machine, not hand timed, data. ERH: is the estimated horizontal error in kilometers. ERZ: is the estimated vertical error in kilometers. N FM: is the number of readings used to compute the magnitude. REMKS: obtuse region codes that denote the velocity model used to locate the event. DUR MAG: is the magnitude as determined from the duration of the seismograms, not the amplitude.
