Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of January 15 - 21, 1998 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 San Francisco Bay Are During the seven-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, January 21, 1998 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 19 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. Three were as large as M2.0. This total compares to 29 earthquakes during the prior seven-day period (January 8 - 14), eight of which were as large as M2. The first of the M2 events occurred early last Saturday morning on the northern Hayward fault beneath the Oakland Hills (#1/1). No felt reports were received for this earthquake. A M1.6 occurred Wednesday afternoon farther north on the fault beneath the Berkeley Hills. The other two M2 events occurred in the southern Bay Area, the first on the San Andreas fault about five miles northwest of San Juan Bautista (#2/1), the second on the Qien Sabe fault five miles east of Hollister (#3/1). Northern & Central California A minor earthquake last Thursday was felt in much of the northern Lake Tahoe area. The M3.7 event occurred Thursday morning about seven miles north of Truckee and was reported felt aid Tahoe City and Truckee, California and in Carson City, Reno, and Sparks, Nevada (#1/2). The earthquake occurred along the Mohawk Valley seismic trend that extends from Lake Tahoe north to the Lake Almanor/Lassen Peak area. The most recent comparable earthquake in this area was a M3.1 that occurred in July, 1994. In contrast, a M4.1 off the coast of Cape Mendocino on Tuesday morning was apparently not felt locally (#4/2). At a distance of 30 miles west of Petrolia, it was apparently too far offshore to produce noticeable shaking at the coast. It was followed six hours later by a M2.7 aftershock and preceded four days earlier by a M2.4 event just 14 miles west of Petrolia. Other earthquakes of note in the north state included a M2.4 Monday evening about four miles south of Eureka (#6/2). The Coast Ranges were quiet at the M2 level with the exception of the Geysers geothermal area where a dozen events as large as M2 occurred during the week, the largest a M3.0 on Sunday morning (#2/2). Central California experienced a pair of M2 events at the southern end of the creeping segment of the San Andreas about 12 miles northwest of Parkfield (#3/2). This is the third week in a row that this section of the fault has been active at the M2 level. Pairs of M2 events also occurred in the Coalinga area (#7/2) and in the southern Owens Valley about 23 miles south of Lone Pine (#5/2). Long Valley Caldera Seismicity in the caldera declined to its lowest level in nearly two months, since the resurgence of activity along the south side of the caldera began on November 22. During the past week only 18 earthquakes occurred in the caldera that were as large as M2.0. Only two of these were as large as M3. This compares to the previous week when 75 M>2 earthquakes occurred, nine of which were as large as M3. Activity again was focussed primarily in two areas: the area six miles east of Mammoth Lakes near the Mammoth Lakes airport (#2/3) and the area about two miles east of Mammoth Lakes near the highway 395 junction (#1/3). USA Seismicity (January 12 - 20) The National Earthquake Information Center reported only one notable earthquake in the lower 48 states outside of California. This M3.0 event occurred east of Challis, Idaho. It is not known if this event was felt by local residents. A M3.1 in the San Fernando Valley was felt by residents of Pacoima (#2/4). This was apparently an aftershock of the 1994 M6.7 Northridge earthquake. The Planet Earth (January 12 - 20) There were no large earthquakes on the planet during the week. Felt events included a M5.0 near the east coat of Honshu, Japan that felt as far away as Tokyo and Yokohama (#2/5), a M5.1 in the Fox Islands of the Aleutian archipelago that was strongly felt at Akutan, a M4.9 along the coast of north Chile that was felt at Copiapo and Tierra Amarilla, and a M5.7 in the Kurila Islands that was felt in eastern Hokkaido, Japan (#6/5).
