Description p. 17
Abstract Following the collision of the Greek Motor Vessel Eleni V and a French ore carrier off the coast of Lowestoft, Suffolk, England, in May 1978, a Mk II-9 Oil Mop machine was set up on the North Beach area of Lowestoft where an extensive pocket of oil was trapped behind the ruins of an old sea wall. After 3 hr of operation an effective recovery rate of 5 TPH was established. Vacuum trucks set up by the local Council found it impossible to pump the oil so a small steam generating plant was brought in to heat the oil. Two more Mk II-9 and 1 Mk II-4 machines were put into service, and because there was only 1 generating plant, all the equipment was operated in close formation. Overall recovery by the machines during the 16 d period was 1,024 T. The oil:water ratio in the emulsion was reasonably stable at about 50:50. Free water mechanically trapped in the recovered oil, and the water from the generating plant, was decanted from the vacuum trucks before they left to discharge their loads.
