Description p. 11-12
Abstract Oil recovery, like any emergency operation, requires a constant high pitch of training and readiness. Unready crews are at present the critical oil pollution factor. The preferred method of cleanup is physical removal using oil-retention booms and a rotary oil skimmer. British Petroleum Company and Vickers Limited have developed 2 booms-the Vikoma Seapack and the Vikoma Oceanpack. The Seapack and Oceanpack booms incorporate a double-tube system; the lower tube if filled with pressurized seawater and acts as a keel, while the upper tube is filled with air. This design allows efficient operation of the Seapack in winds less than 40 km and waves less than 10 ft high. Flat when deflated, the boom is easy to transport and is deployed and inflated almost entirely automatically. The Oceanpack is larger and has twice the tensile strength of the Seapack and is intended to withstand even greater stress. The booms are intended for use with the Vikoma Seaskimmer rotary oil skimmer. The ease of operation may encourage better training of oil recovery crews.
