History
In May 1985, the Laredo South Border Patrol Station became the second Border Patrol station located on U.S. Highway 83 South, within the city limits of Laredo, Texas. The original workforce for the station was 27 agents, including the Patrol Agent in Charge.

The station is currently located at a temporary location, 9001 San Dario Avenue, Laredo, Texas. Staffing includes a Patrol Agent in Charge, an Assistant Patrol Agent in Charge, Field Operations Supervisors, Special Operations Supervisors, First-Line Supervisors, and over 225 agents.

The Laredo South Station, like all of the Border Patrol, has a clear strategic goal: to establish and maintain operational control of the border of the United States. Laredo South’s efforts are focused on this goal. To achieve this goal, five objectives have been identified:

  • Establish substantial probability of apprehending terrorists and their weapons as they attempt to enter illegally between the ports of entry;
  • Deter illegal entries through improved enforcement;

  • Detect, apprehend, and deter smugglers of humans, drugs, and other contraband;
  • Leverage "Smart Border" technology to multiply the effect of enforcement personnel; and,
  • Reduce crime in the Laredo community and consequently improve the quality of life and economic vitality of the area.

Area of Responsibility
The area of responsibility has remained the same over the years; over 1,000 square miles of land and over 30 miles of the Rio Grande River. River operations begin at the Laredo Community College located at old Fort McIntosh and continue downriver to the Webb County/Zapata County line. Today’s agents perform operational duties that consist of linewatch, freight train checks, airport passenger checks, canine patrol, All Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) patrol units, and signcutting.

A large majority of the Laredo South area of operation is considered an urban environment. The population of Laredo, Texas has grown to over 250,000 residents and the sister city of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas, Mexico has grown to over 500,000 residents. With the combined population nearing one million people, the Laredo South Agents must remain vigilant at all times in order to interdict the criminal element at entry and secure our Nation’s borders.
