QUESTION 130:
A month ago I found an image of a glacier on an
obsure NASA page - it took me forever to find, and
now I can't find it again. It was a glacier in
Alaska, image taken by a European SAR satellite.
The title of the page was something similar to
"some of our favorite images", had a dark
background with thumbnails of the satellite images
along the left (about 6 of them?) and was in a
different design-style than the other NASA pages
I'd seen. Is there anyone who can help me find me
way back there? Thanks!

I'm using the European Space Agency's (ESA) public

success with C-band, but not L-band. Is there

Are there any other ISAR users out there anyway

Does anyone know of any other public domain

why such a mature science is still so closely

Hi, looking for a little info please.
I'm a graduate student in geology, and have worked
with airborne radar a little in the past.
However, when I received my 8mm tape from the EROS

it (being that the web pages at JPL mention the

Can anyone tell me where I can obtain the X-band

Also, is it possible to obtain radar data on

QUESTION 68:
Greetings. This is going to be a long one...
I have a question about the multilook processing
for SIR-C MLC data. (This seems like it should be
really straightforward, but for some reason I'm
baffled.)
The image I'm working with is dual-pol, MLC, with
12.5 meter pixel spacing and a nominal 25 meter
resolution. The "Total Number of Looks" according
to the leader file is 3.9764600. The image is in
ground range (as all MLC images are, I guess).
My understanding of multilooking is that one can
average pixels in range or azimuth or both, and
the number of looks is just Nr x Na. (This seems
to be supported by an example in the DCOMP
software manual.) Based on the literature (e.g.,
Lee et al. 1994, Speckle Filtering of Synthetic
Aperture Radar Images: A Review), it appears that
after multilooking in amplitude (=sqrt(power)),
the standard deviation of speckle noise should
decrease. Specifically, for homogeneous areas,
the ratio of the standard deviation to the mean
should = 0.5227/sqrt(N_looks). Alternatively,
the "Effective Number of Looks" (ENL) should be
(0.5227/[stdev/mean])^2.
SO... I synthesize amplitude images from the raw
MLC data and multilook them to various degrees,
always using the same number of looks in range and
azimuth. I then find a nice homogeneous area and
calculate the SD/Mean ratio and the ENL.
When I average 2 x 2 pixels, to get to the nominal
25 x 25 m resolution of the data, I get a ratio of
0.1839, or an ENL of 8.08, just about exactly 2x
the "Total Number of Looks" of the original
"3.98-look" data.
When I average 3 x 3 pixels, I get a ratio of
0.1569, or an ENL of 11.10, slightly under 3x the
original "3.98" looks.
When I average 4 x 4 pixels, I get a ratio of
0.1349, or an ENL of 15.02, slightly under 4x the
original "3.98" looks.
When I average 6 x 6 pixels, I get a ratio of
0.1083, or an ENL of 23.29, just about 6x the
original "3.98" looks.
.. and so on.
Now, if you're following me so far.... Here are my
questions.
(1) If I multilook the amplitude data by 2 in both
azimuth and range, shouldn't the number of looks
increase by a factor of 4? Instead, in each of
the above cases, the ENL seems to increase by the
sqrt of the new multilooking. That is, if I use
Na x Nr pixels, the ENL seems to increase by N not
N^2. What am I not understanding?
(2) What exactly does the "Total number of looks"
refer to in the leader file? Is that some measure
of the effective number of looks after converting
from slant to ground range, multilooking the data,
and resampling to 12.5 meters? If so, it seems
odd that my calculated ENL for the original raw
amplitude data is about 6.4, not 3.98. Obviously,
the oversampling complicates this, but is there a
simple way to understand what's going on?
If anyone has followed all this, and has any
thoughts or suggestions, I'd love to hear a
response. I have a feeling I'm doing something
wrong somewhere, but can't figure out where....

In looking at the image from Houston, TX, I have been curious as to whether or not there are any satellites which are able to give real time data (excepting weather satellites) on pollution, radiative energy levels during the winter (as in heat loss, radiative energy loss) and the names of such satellites. If there are any, is there any way for someone to access the real time data and have it relayed to their computer? I know weather satellite information is through NOAA, but if this is such the case, then information as to setting this up would be most helpful. One other quick thing: If this technology doesn't exist, when will it be available? Please answer my question. Thanks.
