Comment: gB is required for viral growth, virus infectivity and cell penetration. It forms a dimer and Roizman reports gamma expression regulation in HSV-1 (Roizman PNAS 93:11307,1996, Medline: 97030190).
In HSV-2 UL27 contains a tandem nucleotide repeat, given in genome cordinates at 56029 - 56056, with period/unit size 9, copy # 3.1, and 100% matches with no insert/deletes.
A second ORF in both HSV-1 and HSV-2 was identified by Chang et al.(1998) coding antisense to UL27 and designated UL27.5. The 10 cysteines in gB are linked by disulfide bonds, see Norais et al.(1996). A syn(syncytium) minus loci maps to the carboxyl terminus of UL27, see Hutchinson et al.(1993). Kosovsky et al. (1999) find gB to be essential for fusion between virion envelope and cell membrane in HSV-1.
