U.S. Embassy Acknowledges Czech Humanitarian Aid to Regions Affected by Hurricane Katrina 

Prague – January 27, 2006

The U.S. Embassy in Prague greatly appreciates the humanitarian aid provided by Czech citizens, institutions and companies, to the areas in the United States devastated by Hurricane Katrina.  At the time of this natural disaster that affected the southern part of the U.S. last summer, the Czech Republic was among the first countries to immediately offer a helping hand.  This selfless assistance, begun in the aftermath of the hurricane, is still continuing today.

            As one example, we appreciate the recent humanitarian assistance worth USD $100,000 which was given this week to an elementary school in Deweyville, Texas. Additional financial aid from the Czech Republic is also promised to the public library in Bayou la Battre, Alabama, to a charitable pharmacy in Biloxi, Mississippi, and to New Orleans University in Louisiana.

            "We are convinced that the financial aid will help the institutions to operate fully once again and will also contribute to the restoration of normal life in the affected areas," commented U.S. Ambassador William J. Cabaniss. "We are grateful for the friendship of the Czech people which is amply demonstrated by the continuing commitment to restoration of the area affected by Hurricane Katrina."

Praha – 26. ledna 2006.  Velvyslanectví USA v Praze si vysoce cení humanitární pomoci, kterou čeští občané, instituce a firmy poskytli a poskytují oblastem ve Spojených státech zasažených ničivým hurikánem Katrina. Již během této přírodní katastrofy, která loni v létě postihla jih Spojených států, se Česká republika zařadila mezi země, které okamžitě nabídly pomocnou ruku. A její nezištná pomoc při odstraňování následků přírodního živlu i nadále pokračuje.
 
Jedním z příkladů, kterého si nesmírně vážíme, je humnitární dar ve výši 100 tisíc dolarů předaných tento týden základní škole v texaském Deweyeville. Finanční pomoc mají přislíbenu také veřejná knihovna v alabamském městě Bayou la Battre, charitativní lékárna v mississippském Biloxi a univerzita v New Orleansu.
 
"Jsme přesvědčeni, že finanční pomoc pomůže postiženým institucím opět plnohodnotně pracovat a přispěje k navrácení normálního chodu života v zasažených oblastech", řekl velvyslanec Spojených států William J. Cabaniss. "Vážíme si přátelství Čechů, které nám dokazují pokračující pomocí při obnově oblastí postižených hurikánem Katrina."
