WORKSHOP
ON
THERMODYNAMIC
AND STRUCTURAL PROPERTIES OF MATERIALS
Sunday September 9 - Friday
September 14, 2001
Palais
des Papes Avignon France.
Conference
Scope:
The purpose of this workshop
is to bring together theorists and
experimentalists who work on
modeling and characterization of materials
properties at various length
and time scales. The objective is to bring
together an international group
of academic and industrial experts to
assess the current state of
the art in the following topics:
1) ab-initio and semi-empirical methods for modeling the
energetics of
phase transitions at the
atomistic scale:
Chemical order/disorder;
Phonon driven structural
ordering, e.g. ferroelectrics
Systems in which chemical-
and phonon-driven ordering are coupled
Extended defects (dislocations,
grain boundaries, interfaces...);
Surfaces;
Applications: phase stability,
phase diagrams...
2) methods for coupling atomistic and mesoscopic space scales;
3) phase transformation and structural evolution in alloys:
Phase separation, ordering,
grain growth...;
Pattern formation;
Computational methods: Phase
Field, Monte Carlo with elastic relaxation
Role of defects (dislocations,
grain boundaries, interfaces...)
Link with macroscopic properties;

Location:
Palais
des Papes
Avignon
France
A wonderful very old palace in the middle of the city
Palais des Papes was the papal palace during the 14th-century,
when
Avignon replaced Rome as capital of the Catholic Church.
Two popes are buried in the Notre-Dame des Doms Cathedral.
Pont St-Bénézet, which extends from the ramparts
of Palais des Popes
to an abrupt end in the middle of the Rhone River,
is the one mentioned in the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon"
Avignon is a UNESCO World Heritage
Site, with charming churches, cafés, and museums, and
beautiful views from the park of Rocher des Doms.
