BLM Closes Longfellow Mill Site

The Bureau of Land Management has temporarily closed 2.5 acres of public land containing the Longfellow Gold Mine Stamp Mill site to all motorized vehicle use following a May 13 fire.

"The purpose of this emergency order is to protect the Longfellow Mill site from looting, vandalism, and unauthorized salvage of artifacts associated with the mill site," said Bill Haigh, BLM Folsom Field Office manager. The closure will remain in effect until artifacts associated with the Longfellow Mill site are secured by BLM.

The closed area is located in the community of Big Oak Flat in Tuolumne County. Cause of the fire is under investigation.

Closure signs will be posted at main entry points to these areas.  Maps of the closure area may be obtained from the Folsom Field Office, 63 Natoma St., Folsom, Calif. 95630; call (916) 985-4474.
