RIKEN BNL RESEARCH CENTER WORKSHOPS

GENERAL INFORMATION

The RIKEN BNL Research Center (RBRC) was established in April 1997 at Brookhaven National Laboratory.  It is funded by the ``Rikagaku Kenkysho'' (RIKEN, The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research) of Japan.  The Center is dedicated to the study of strong interactions, including spin physics, lattice QCD and RHIC physics through the nurturing of a new generation of young physicists.

During the first year, the Center had only a Theory Group.  In the second year, an Experimental Group was also established at the Center.  At present, there are seven Fellows and nine post docs in these two groups.  During the third year, we started a new Tenure Track Strong Interaction Theory RHIC Physics Fellow Program, with six positions in the academic year 1999-2000; this program will increase to include eleven theorists in the next academic year, and, in the year after, also be extended to experimental physics.  In addition, the Center has an active workshop program on strong interaction physics, about ten workshops a year, with each workshop focused on a specific physics problem.  Each workshop speaker is encouraged to select five of the most important transparencies from his or her presentation, accompanied by a page of explanation.  This material is collected at the end of the workshop by the organizer to form proceedings, which can therefore be available within a short time.

The construction of a 0.6 teraflop parallel processor, which was begun at the Center on February 19, 1998, was completed on August 28, 1998.

PROCEEDINGS

In order to produce Proceedings for each Workshop, speakers must select five significant transparencies and prepare a one-page summary of the principal points of their presentation. This material, collected at the workshop, allows the Proceedings to be prepared promptly.

ON-SITE HOUSING

There are several types of housing available on site at BNL. If you plan to stay on site, please complete the housing portion of the registration form and return it before the specified deadline. After this deadline, we cannot guarantee that on-site housing will be available.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

DRIVING - Various Directions (Airports, BNL, Berkner Hall/Cafeteria, Physics Department)

To BNL from JFK Airport:
Leaving JFK, take the Southern Belt Parkway east. After a few miles this becomes the Laurelton, and then the Southern State Parkway. Stay on the Southern State Parkway to Exit 41A and take the Sagtikos Parkway north for about five miles to Exit S1, which is I-495 east (the Long Island Expressway). Continue on this to Exit 68 (William Floyd Parkway, County Road 46). Go north on William Floyd Parkway and just before the second light is a turn off on your right to BNL. At the gate indicate that you are attending the RIKEN BNL Workshop.

To BNL from LaGuardia Airport:
Leaving LaGuardia, get on the Grand Central Parkway going east. Stay on the Grand Central Parkway for about 30-45 minutes (typically). Note that you stay on the Grand Central Parkway all the way through Queens. About 5 miles from the LaGuardia Airport, you pass I-495, but do NOT get on I-495 there. Stay on the Grand Central Parkway until it turns into the Northern State Parkway and take this to Exit 37A, which is I-495 east (the Long Island Expressway). Continue on 495 east to Exit 68 (William Floyd Parkway, County Road 46), Go north on William Floyd Parkway and just before the second light is a turn off on your right to BNL. At the gate indicate that you are attending the RIKEN BNL Workshop.

To BNL from Newark Airport:
The traffic is insane except late at night. But, if your flight gets bumped, you may end up here. The easiest way from Newark airport is to take I-95 north to I-495 east:

You enter Manhattan on 39th Street and go east to 3rd or 2nd Avenues by 36th Street, and look for the signs to the Queens Midtown Tunnel. The Midtown Tunnel lets you out on I-495 which you take east to Exit 68 (William Floyd Parkway, County Road 46). Go north on William Floyd Parkway and just before the second light is a turn off on your right to BNL. At the gate indicate that you are attending the RIKEN BNL Workshop.

To JFK Airport from BNL:
From Exit 68 on I-495, go west to Exit 53, the Sagtikos and Sunken Meadow Parkways. Take the Sagtikos Parkway south about five miles to Exit S4, to the Southern State Parkway heading west. It is typically about 40 minutes on the Southern State Parkway to JFK. You stay on the Southern State Parkway until it becomes the Laurelton Parkway, and then the Southern Belt Parkway. The exit for JFK on the Southern Belt Parkway is Exit 19. Note that there is an Exit 19 on the Southern State Parkway, about 10 minutes before you hit JFK. Don't get off there, wait for the signs to JFK.

To LaGuardia Airport from BNL:
From Exit 68 at I-495 (the Long Island Expressway), go west to Exit 53, the Sunken Meadow and Sagtikos Parkways. Go north on the Sunken Meadow Parkway for about 2 miles to exit SM1, the Northern State Parkway. Take the Northern State Parkway west to LaGuardia Airport.

To Berkner Hall at BNL:
Bernker Hall is within the BNL Cafeteria building, located off of Brookhaven Avenue. Go through the entrance gate to BNL, turn left at the light onto Upton Road. Make your second right onto Brookhaven Avenue (firehouse on your left). Make your first left to the Cafeteria/Berkner Hall.

To the Physics Department (Building 510):
Go through the entrance gate to BNL, turn left at the light onto Upton Road. Make your second right onto Brookhaven Avenue (firehouse on your left). Make your forth left onto Pennsylvania Street. The Physics Department is the large brick building on your right.

LONG ISLAND RAILROAD SERVICE

For information on the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) System see the www site http://www.mta.nyc.ny.us/index.html or call 516-231-LIRR in Suffolk County or 718-217-LIRR in New York City.

The LIRR runs to Penn Station (Manhattan); a hub for Amtrak and close to Madison Square Garden and the theaters.

There are several convenient train stations in the area. The Ronkonkoma line is the fastest to and from New York City and trains run nearly every hour. For directions and van service to Ronkonkoma see below. There is a closer station, Mastic-Shirley, but it has fewer runs to and from the city ... it is located on William Floyd Parkway (County Road 46), just south of the intersection of Montauk Highway.

To get to the LIRR Ronkonkoma station by car, take William Floyd Parkway South (County Road 46) to the Long Island Expressway West (I-495) to Exit 60, go south, and follow the signs.

There is also van service back and forth to the Ronkonkoma station. Every Monday through Friday morning a BNL van meets the 7:39 train from Penn Station which arrives at Ronkonkoma at 8:57 am and will transport you to BNL. Exit the train on the north side of the station, go downstairs to street level to the LIRR Ticket Office (next to Dunkin Donuts). Please note that the driver will only wait 10 minutes for passengers so don't get tempted and end up being stuck in line in Dunkin Donuts! This service will get you on site at BNL at approximately 9:30 am.

For service from BNL to the Ronkonkoma station, you must make reservations by calling BNL's Transportation Office (516-344-2535/2536; please note that if you are calling from within BNL, you need only dial the last four-digit extension).
