Boehner: Speaker Pelosi’s Latest Effort “Another Flawed Plan That Will Do Little to Lower Gas Prices”
GOP Leader Challenges Speaker to Reconvene Congress and Schedule a Vote on the American Energy Act

Washington, Aug 16, 2008 - House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) issued the following statement this morning in response to the radio address delivered by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and the failure of the Democrat-controlled Congress to increase American-made energy and lower record gasoline prices:

“Speaker Pelosi and the Democrat-controlled Congress have presided over an historic rise in gas prices, and their refusal to address this crisis has made matters even worse for American families, small businesses, seniors, and schools. The facts do not lie.  Under this Democrat-controlled Congress, gas prices have soared by nearly $1.50 per gallon, and Speaker Pelosi has refused to allow a simple up-or-down vote on the House Republicans’ American Energy Act to increase all forms of energy, including renewable and alternative fuels, to bring those prices back down.  Unfortunately, the Speaker is deliberately misrepresenting the facts about our plan in order to shift attention away from the Democrats' shameful record.  America deserves better.

“If Speaker Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues were truly serious about increasing production of American energy and lowering the price of gasoline, they would call Congress back into session immediately to vote on our ‘all of the above’ energy plan, rather than taking a five-week break away from Washington.  While the Speaker now claims to embrace a comprehensive energy plan that includes more conservation, more innovation, and more American energy production, the fact is her new effort appears to be just another flawed plan that will do little to lower gas prices.

“House Republicans’ unprecedented nationwide gas prices protest enters its third full week on Monday, and our message of more American-made energy and lower gas prices is clearly resonating with the American people.  We will not relent until we secure a vote on the American Energy Act.”

NOTE:  Increased American energy production is a cornerstone of House Republicans’ American Energy Act (H.R. 6566), an “all of the above” plan to lower gas prices by encouraging more conservation and efficiency, promoting the use of more alterative and renewable fuels, and expanding drilling on remote lands and far off American shores in an environmentally-safe way.  Speaker Pelosi and her Democratic colleagues adjourned Congress on August 1 for a five-week recess without allowing a vote on the GOP plan – or any meaningful energy solutions for that matter – to lower gas prices.
