Abstract Britain's major aircraft manufacturers, British Aerospace and Short Brothers, are seeking to continue as primary transport producers by emphasizing development of aircraft capable of providing economical service to noise-sensitive areas. British Aerospace has three aircraft now in production that are premised on the need for aircraft capable of operating from smaller airports in noise-sensitive areas, often at off-peak hours, and of making a profit while operating at low load factors. Short Brothers has begun a year-long program of validating its proposed FJX small turbofan aircraft, which it hopes to develop with partner companies from other nations. The key to the success of the initial 40-60 seat FJX design is the use of new-technology engines that will meet existing and future international noise requirements while providing the needed thrust to allow the aircraft to operate from smaller airports.
