Project Title: PRESSURE ULCER RATES IN DESCRIBING NURSING HOME QUALITY

Abstract:

PRESSURE ULCER RATES IN DESCRIBING NURSING HOME QUALITY
R01 HS09768-02
04/01/99
DESCRIPTION: The investigators will develop a risk-adjustment outcome measure
using an existing database(the MDS) from National Health Care, a private
nursing home chain, to evaluate case-mix adjusted rates of pressure ulcer
development at individual nursing homes. Predictors of pressure ulcer
development are currently available in the Minimum Data Set (MDS) which are
routinely kept in these homes. Rates of pressure ulcer development will be
identified from among patient characteristics described in this data set. Two
samples will be used, one to perform multivariate analysis to develop a model
to predict pressure ulcer development and a second sample to validate the
model. Observed and expected rates of pressure ulcer development will be
calculated for individual nursing homes and will be compared to assessments
based on other risk-adjusted models. The development of a valid and reliable
management tool could provide a measure of the overall quality of care that is
provided in these homes. Second, it could be used to evaluate programs aimed
at improving the quality of care and reduce the development of pressure ulcers
in these homes.
