Abstract The construction of landfills in almost all Brazilian cities with a population of over 200,000 inhabitants has become a problem not to be ignored by any municipal administration. Disordered waste disposal has caused serious problems whose solution should follow the knowledge and management of landfill behavior. In Brazil, practically no city performs an ordered selective control of waste collection or post-collection. In general, therefore, heterogeneous waste disposal in such places is characterized in some studies as "homogeneous" material. This paper provides some field observations from the installed instrumentation in one of the largest waste landfills in the city of Sao Paulo. Some characteristics of the material disposed on this site are also given and compared with waste material disposal in other countries. The proposal in question includes monitoring of the landfill behavior using remote control. This system consists of measuring geotechnical aspects in addition to the ongoing observation of meteorological conditions which include rainfall, temperature and evapo-transpiration. The automatic remote monitoring proposal is presented and briefly discussed.
