| Abstract:
|
This is the first of a series of reports on Illinois' Repeat Offender Project, which is tracking a random sample of 769 inmates released between April 1983 and June 30, 1983. The group of 537 considered in this bulletin excluded those in the larger sample already on parole when they received their final discharge during the 3 months when the sample was drawn. Recidivism was measured by an official record of arrest or incarceration after release. Recidivism data were obtained from the Illinois Computerized Criminal History system, and releasee demographic data were supplied by the Department of Corrections. Approximately half of the releases were arrested within 18-20 months after their release, and most arrests occurred in the first 8-9 months. Nearly one-third were incarcerated within the 18-20 months. Offenders with the highest number of prior arrests were more likely to be arrested or incarcerated than those with less extensive criminal histories. The majority of the 537 offenders had more than 1 previous arrest, and approximately one-third had 10 or more. Graphic and tabular data. |
