Evaluation of the Functional Independence Measurement (FIM) of the AIDS patients in the Home Care in Porto Alegre City - Brazil.

BACKGROUND: This study is justified for the non-existence of research about the index in functional independence at the accomplishment of daily life activities in holders of HIV/AIDS and because there are few researches in physiotherapy and for the necessity of objeticves indicators to the services of Home Health Care in Brazil. The main problem is: the attendance given to AIDS' patients for the Home Care service change the functional dependence level on these individuals? METHODS: Longitudinal study. From March 2000 to June 2001 was evaluated 41 patients interned at the service of home care to AIDS patients in the city of Porto Alegre, Brazil, which is linked to the City Council Health Department. The instrument for collecting the used in this study is the Functional Independence Measurement (FIM). The modifications of FIM shows the effects or results of the program. The final results will be analysed through the statistic non-parametric test called Mann-Whitney. RESULTS: From March 2000 to June 2001 was evaluated 41 patients of AIDS, 16 (39%) of them were classified as dependents with total assistance, 7 (17%) as modified independents, 6 (14,5%) as dependents with minimum assistance, 5 (12, 19%) dependents with moderate assistance and 7 (16,9%) as dependents with maximum assistance in the first evaluation. CONCLUSIONS: the partial results pointed that patients with modified dependence with minimum or moderate assistance change its level of dependence on the realization of daily life activities; the patients with complete dependence with maximum or total assistance didn't show modifications of FIM and the medium period of internment in domicile for one modification at FIM is around 85 days.
