Annotation: Testimony and prepared statements review State, Federal, and local drug interdiction efforts, with a focus on the flow of drugs across the Mexico-U.S. border.
Abstract: Statements examine the extent of illicit drug use and its social and economic costs. Drug smuggling and interdiction in New Mexico are discussed, and difficulties in controlling the illegal drug flow resulting from understaffing and insufficient funding are noted. Police drug law enforcement policies and procedures in Las Cruces, N.Mex., also are outlined. Major initiatives, including interagency cooperation and coordination, that have significantly improved drug trafficking investigation and prosecution are discussed, as are U.S. Department of Defense support of civilian antidrug efforts. The National Narcotics Border Interdiction System is described as part of the Federal strategy for drug abuse and trafficking prevention. Finally, efforts undertaken by the Drug Enforcement Administration and the Customs Service are outlined.
