This FIF Centenary Issue celebrates 100 years of activities of th French Railway Industry Federation (FIF). During the 20th centur French railways have experienced periods of major restructuring a important structural reforms. For the first 40 years, FIF's customers were the big private regional railway companies, then, 1938 on, the French National Railways (SNCF), which was owned and by the state, took over. Restructuring during the 1990s included (1) the reforms and privatisations of publicly owned networks; (2 the separation of network management from infrastructure operatio (3) the beginnings of high-speed interoperability; and (4) substituting a European system of tenders for the previous 'mutua agreement' period. These are just some of the recent changes tha are having a radical effect throughout the French railway industr On the supply side, the industry is now adopting a more global outlook, and adjusting rapidly to keep its leading place in world markets. The 1993 commission of inquiry into SNCF's operations l to reform and new trains for the regional railways, with better services, higher income, and more passengers. One of FIF's top priorities is a more constructive relationship between private manufacturers and public operators, using a 'win-win' approach. |
