Holiday shutdown to affect lab services

The holiday break at both Argonne-East and Argonne-West begins Wednesday, Dec. 24 and continues through Sunday, Jan. 4.

Only employees required to properly maintain the laboratory's facilities will be scheduled to work.

    * Paychecks: Bi-weekly paid employees will receive their normal payroll check/deposit on Friday, Dec. 19, for the pay period ending Sunday, Dec. 21. The check/deposit for the two weeks ending Sunday, Jan. 4, will be paid for projected hours during that period and will be available or deposited by Tuesday, Dec. 23. These wages will be included on the 1997 W-2 form.

Overtime, premium and shift premium pay for the period of Dec. 8 through Dec. 21 will be paid on Monday, Jan. 5, provided timecards are received by the deadline date. Deadline for timecards at Argonne-East is Friday, Dec. 19. Timecards must be hand-carried to the Payroll Office in Building 201 at the end of the shift. At Argonne-West, time cards must be hand-carried to Shelley Wray's office in Building 710 no later than 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 18.

Payroll for the hours worked by STAs, CO-OPs and temporary service personnel during the pay period of Dec. 8 through Dec. 21 will be paid on Monday, Jan. 5, provided time cards are received by the deadlines.

Monthly paid checks will be distributed or deposited on Tuesday, Dec. 23.

    * Site access at Argonne-East: Northgate will be open 24 hours a day through the holiday break. Westgate will be closed on Dec. 25 and Jan. 1 but will otherwise operate on its normal schedule -- 6:15 a.m. to 7:10 p.m. on weekdays. Eastgate will be closed Wednesday, Dec. 24 through Sunday, Jan. 4.

The Argonne Information Center (AIC) will be closed through the period. Visitors expected during the break can be put on the site-access list by calling the AIC at ext. 2-5755 by Tuesday, Dec. 23.

To register a visitor, employees can call the protective force at ext. 2-5730. Foreign nationals from sensitive countries will not be allowed on site unless they have been registered at the AIC before the holiday break.

    * Deliveries, shipments: No deliveries can be accepted at the laboratory during the holiday break. Commercial package delivery companies will hold all shipments until Monday, Jan. 5.

Employees expecting shipments to arrive during the break should make arrangements to have the items delivered off-site. Federal Express will collect items in on-site drop boxes once a day, except for Christmas Day and New Year's Day when there will be no pick-up. For more information, call ext. 2-2934.

    * The travel office will be closed. Business travelers with trips scheduled during the holiday break, or immediately after the laboratory reopens, should pick up their tickets, money and travel papers before 5 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23.

To make or change travel arrangements during the holiday break, business travelers should call American Express at (847) 437-8012, ext. 6050, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and ask for Billie.

    Essling receives 1997 Jensen Award

Chemist Alice M. Essling (CMT-AC) received the Kenneth J. Jensen Award of the Chemical Technology Division's Analytical Chemistry Laboratory.

"Our recipient is someone whose record of quality is almost legendary," said Don Graczyk (CMT-AC), Essling's supervisor. "Someone who can be counted on to do every job as well as it can be done, whether it's small and invisible or large and high-profile."

Essling specializes in inorganic chemistry, high-precision determinations, isotope dilution techniques, dissolutions and separations. She takes on challenging assignments in preparing samples, develops new methods or applications and performs exacting measurements. Essling recently developed inorganic preparation methods to characterize high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter waste to satisfy acceptance criteria for DOE's Hanford Site.

The Jensen Award, established in 1996, honors one of the charter members of Argonne's Analytical Chemistry Laboratory. It recognizes outstanding work by current Argonne employees.

Jensen led the Analytical Chemistry Laboratory's chemical analysis group from 1975 until his retirement, and continued to perform consulting work with the laboratory until his death in 1994 -- after 50 years of service.

The Argonne Guest House Restaurant will hold a "Beaujolais nouveau" dinner celebration on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and Wednesday, Dec. 10.

Chef Chris Kaminsky will prepare a special French menu on those two evenings; dinner will be served from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The special menu will include main courses like Frisée salad with poached egg and pancetta, sea scallops with fennel, duck leg confit with warm lentil salad and pork tenderloin with apple and onions. Desserts will range from créme brulee to goat cheese cake.
