nancyann7@frontiernet.net 07/07/2008 09:17 PM To Docket OEI@EPA cc bcc Subject Protect My Community From Air Pollution - Docket Number: # EPA-HQ-OGC-2008-0488 US EPA Dear US EPA, Please fulfill your responsibilities under the law and address the serious airborne contaminants from the proposed Desert Rock coal plant. This 1500 megawatt coal plant would be one of the largest in the western United States. It would pump out millions of tons of global warming pollution and toxic mercury emissions over the 50 to 60 years it would operate. Please don't issue the permit for this facility until you have completed your responsibility to address harmful global warming and mercury emissions from the proposed facility, to assure it has adequately considered clean energy alternatives. The Southwest is home to world class solar and wind resources that have not been untilized, and can power our economy without harming human health and the environment. I am very concerned that you have proposed to issue a final decision on the permit for the proposed Desert Rock facility as early as July 31, 2008. This huge facility will emit large volumes of air pollution and will have impacts on the Four Corners region for decades to come. Issuing a premature decision by July 31 without requiring the necessary protections puts the health and air quality of our communities at risk. The Four Corners region is already burdened with numerous industrial facilities that foul our air quality. The decision to permit a new facility should not be made lightly and without a full review of all the options to reduce these emissions. Please consider motivational strategies to motivate development of some of the clean energy alternatives. The Four Corners region is blessed with enormous clean energy resources. By utilizing those resources we can meet energy demand in the region without further burdening air quality with another coal plant. Sincerely, NancyAnn Stealey P.O. Box 1566 Fort Defiance, AZ 86504
