"QUALITATIVE LEVERS" FOR SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACTS - OVERCOMING A METHODOLOGICAL CHALLENGE.

Introduction: A major asset for technology assessors is timely, accurate, and updated information, especially when there is a need to incorporate "breaking news" results into assessments. Information regarding well-established technologies is prevalent in the scientific literature, and therefore can be qualitatively evaluated using the Impact-Factor (IF). However, there is no systematic and objective method to determine the relative importance of substantive not-yet published evidence (such as conference abstracts), which is the foremost source of information regarding new/emerging technologies. Aim: To provide "qualitative levers" for not-yet published scientific abstracts, having the coronary-stent as a case-study. Methods: 1. Conduct a literature search using predefined keywords and selection of a random sample of abstracts. 2. Establish a structured questionnaire (fifteen criteria) and analyze abstracts accordingly. 3. Create an IF prediction model upon statistical analysis of the collected parameters, and validate the model. Results A total of 841(15%) abstracts were used for data collection. A linear regression model was applied in order to identify the contributing parameters to the IF. The most dominant parameters: type of publication and language, type of research and scope, and country of research. The overall R2-value reached 59%. Model validation revealed an 11% difference between the observed and the predicted IF. Conclusions: The suggested model may serve as a tool for qualitative evaluation, with high level of certainty, of not-yet published abstracts regarding the coronary-stent. Overcoming this challenge is of high importance, especially in Israel, where rapid assessments are performed and technology policy is set in a timely manner.
