Indiana Senators Send 400 Gift Packages to Indiana National Guard Troops in Iraq and Afghanistan

In a joint project to thank Hoosier men and women stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan, Senators Dick Lugar and Evan Bayh mailed care packages to hundreds of Indiana National Guard members.  Four hundred boxes - packed with socks, toiletries, snack foods, games, CDs and sunglasses - were sent to unit leaders identified by the Indiana National Guard for distribution at their discretion to individual Guard members.

On Monday, July 30, staff from both Indiana Senate offices and Hoosier interns stuffed the boxes in an assembly line, affixed mailing labels and stacked them on dollies to be taken to the Post Office.

“I’m constantly reminded of the sacrifice made by the men and women that so nobly serve our country. These gift packages show that we are thinking about them and care for their well-being and safety,” Senator Lugar said.

“There’s a lot of things - toiletries, snacks, about anything soldiers might like to have - to brighten their day a little bit," said Adam Kline, an intern in Senator Lugar’s office from Hartford City and a Purdue student, who helped assemble boxes.

The packages included letters from Senators Lugar and Bayh thanking Guard members for their service and sacrifice for the United States. The senators offered thoughts of encouragement and prayers for their safety.

“We are proud of your commitment and admire your patriotism and bravery. Our state and our nation owe you a debt of gratitude for your service. We extend our thoughts and prayers for the personal safety and the continued strength of you and your family,” the Senators wrote.

“The sacrifice our Indiana National Guard men and women are making for our state and country is immeasurable, and they deserve our full support. These care packages are one more small way we can provide some comfort to those guardsmen and women that are serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and let them know that they and their families are in our thoughts and prayers,” Senator Bayh said.

The included items were donated by FGX International, NIKE, Inc., Target, The Home Depot, Inc., Unilever, and the Retail Industry Leaders Association.
