Overview

Kaplan University (Kaplan), formerly Kaplan College, Quest College, and American Institute of Commerce (AIC), was founded in 1937. AIC was purchased by Quest Education Corporation in November 1998 and in April 2000 changed its name to Quest College. Quest Education Corporation was purchased in July 2000 by Kaplan, Inc. In November 2000, the name of the college was changed to Kaplan College. In 2004, Kaplan College expanded its academic offerings to include master's-level programs and became Kaplan University.

Kaplan University is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

Kaplan offers master's degrees, bachelor's degrees, associate's degrees, and certificate programs in business, criminal justice, education, nursing and health care, paralegal studies, and technology and design. Kaplan University's distance education programs that are included in the Distance Education Demonstration Program are:

  • Master of Arts in Teaching and Learning;
  • Bachelor of Science in Business, Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, Bachelor of Science in Management, Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Bachelor of Science in Paralegal Studies, and Bachelor of Science in Information Technology;
  • Associate of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration/Accounting, Associate of Applied Science in Business Administration/Management, Associate of Applied Science in Computer Information Systems, Associate of Applied Science in Criminal Justice, and Associate of Applied Science in Paralegal Studies;
  • Accounting and Finance Certificate, Crime Scene Technician Certificate, Health Care Management Certificate, Information Technology Pathway Certificate, Internet and Website Development Certificate, Introduction to Computer Programming Language Certificate, Pathway to Paralegal Certificate, and Terrorism and National Security Management Certificate.

These programs are all offered fully online and courses are offered on a quarter-term basis.

Waivers

The University was given waivers for both the 50 percent rules in Sections 102(a)(3)(A) and 102(a)(3)(B) of the HEA, for the provision that defines a telecommunications student in Section 484(1)(1) of the HEA, and for the provision that requires a minimum number of weeks of instruction in Sections 481(a) and 481(b) and the regulatory provisions that implement those sections in 34 CFR 668.2 and 668.8.

Demonstration Program Cohort

Kaplan University joined the Distance Education Demonstration Program in July 1999 as part of the initial cohort.
