BACKGROUND AND VENUE

The International Triticale Symposia are held at 4 years intervals since 1986, when the first symposium was organized in Sydney, Australia. The next symposia were organized in Passo Fundo, Brazil, 1990; Lisbon, Portugal, 1994; Red Deer, Canada, 1998. At the last triticale symposium in Canada the executive board of the International Triticale Association accepted an offer of Edward Arseniuk made on behalf of the Polish community of triticale researchers and breeders to hold the forthcoming 5th International Triticale Symposium in Poland. Finally, a decision was reached that the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute (IHAR) at Radzików, Poland, will be responsible for hosting and organization of the symposium in the first week of July, 2002.

The Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute was founded on January 1, 1951, as a scientific unit designed for research in breeding and seed production of major field crops. The Institute is under the direction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The Institute is entitled to:

The Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute's programs are conducted in the Research Center in Radzików and in Bonin, Bydgoszcz, Jadwisin, Kraków, M?ochów and Pozna? divisions. Three IHAR commercial breeding companies of SMOLICE, STRZELCE and ZAMARTE on the basis of nine IHAR Experimental Breeding Stations have recently been established. Another nine IHAR Experimental Breeding Stations preserved their former status and still serve in different regions of Poland as experimental sites for IHAR research staff. The Institute's headquarters are located in Radzików.

A Scientific Council acts as a consultative and advisory body for the Director.

There are 1831 employees, 610 of them are involved in research and breeding.

The Institute's mission is to do research and experimental breeding of field crops and to provide information of top quality and value to the domestic and international communities of breeders and researchers, farmers, governmental authorities and the agricultural industry.

IHAR headquarters are located 30 km west of Warsaw in the midst of Mazovian plain. Six km to the north spreads a Kampinos primeval forest, an oasis of fresh air and a quiet. On the ouskirts of the forest there are historical musea, castles and places of remembrance of historical events. Nearby in Pilaszków there is a Ko?ciuszko Museum. Twenty kilometers west of Radzików is located ?elazowa Wola with a manor house - the birthplace of Fryderyk Chopin - surrounded by a beautiful park. On the way to ?elazowa Wola there is a Franciscan Monastery at Niepokalanów founded by father Maxymilian Maria Kolbe. Niepokalanów is a place of many local and international pilgrimages and excursions.

CLIMATE

The weather at the symposium time is usually mild, temperature 20 - 25oC, not much rain and wind.

LANGUAGE

The official language of the symposium will be English. No simultaneous translation will be made.

OBJECTIVES

The symposium aims to bring together scientists and breeders involved in XTriticosecale development to review critically recent advances in the field. The goals of the symposium are to expand the global vision of triticale development at the onset of the new century and millennium. Participants by debating current issues should identify the major scientific challenges to be faced in achieving these goals and recommend key research and breeding objectives to pursue for a successful future and a continuous development of the crop.

SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM CONTENT

The symposium sessions on specific themes will be open with keynote addresses delivered by experts on the current status of the specific aspect of triticale research and/or breeding.

The main themes of the symposium include:

1. Genetics and genetic diversity

2. Cytogenetics

3. Physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology

4. Resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses

5. Breeding and production technology

6. Quality and end use

7. Miscellaneous

PAPER/POSTER PRESENTATIONS

Keynote addresses and oral presentations

Keynote addresses will be limited to 30 minutes and general oral presentations to 15 minutes/ presentation including 2-3 minutes (up to the author) for a discussion. In a case the Scientific Program Committee would decide to extend the length of a presentation, authors will be contacted. All the customary audiovisual aids, i.e. slide (5 x 5 cm, standard frames), overhead (21 x 21 cm) projectors and a computerized display (IBM, MS Power Point) for slides will be available. If other facilities would be required, please notify us in advance, so perhaps we will be able to assist you with our help.

Poster presentations

Posters will be at a high priority and they will be on the display over all symposium oral sessions, i.e. June 30 - July 4. There will be a formal poster viewing after each oral session followed by a discussion. The poster discussion sessions, similarly to the oral ones, will be arranged thematically around the main symposium themes. Each poster discussion session will be guided by an invited Discussion Leader, who will give a short introduction followed by a brief overview (2-3 minutes) of each poster by its author(-s). Then, an open discussion of posters should follow.

PROCEEDINGS

Proceedings (B-5 size sheet, 17.6 cm x 25 cm, 2.5 cm margins, portrait layout) will be edited and available at the symposium. All oral and poster presentations will be published in the proceedings.
