State of Ohio Fleet: Ethanol (E85) Sedans

Fleet VehiclesThe State of Ohio established this demonstration project to evaluate ethanol-compatible, flexible-fuel vehicles (FFVs). An FFV can operate on E85 (a blend of 85% transportation-grade ethanol and 15% gasoline), gasoline, or any blend of ethanol and gasoline up to 85% ethanol. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) funded the collection of operating data from 10 FFVs and three gasoline control vehicles operating in the state fleet. All were 1996 model year Ford Tauruses. The project was designed to compare the costs of operating the FFVs to those of running gasoline vehicles, and to assess the performance and reliability of the FFVs.

During the two-year project, 18 months of operations data (such as fueling information, maintenance data, and cost data) were collected on the vehicles. In addition, a limited number of emissions tests were conducted.
