WHERE AMERICA'S CLIMATE AND WEATHER SERVICES BEGIN

AVN/GFS Renaming Project
Image of horizontal rule

On 24 April 2002 the NCEP AVN model was renamed to the GFS (Global Forecast System).   The name AVN is still used on operational NWS FTP servers to describe GFS model data sets.  A project has begun within NCEP Central Operations (NCO) to rename the AVN labaled products on these servers to GFS.  This project will be accomplished in two stages.  By 15 June 2004 the FTP servers will be populated with symbolically linked data with the GFS name which point to the currently named AVN data sets.  The scond phase of this project will remove all AVN named products leaving only the GFS named products behind.  This second phase will be accomplished no earlier than (NET) 1 January 2005.  The exact date of this change will be published as soon as it is known.

The specific changes, broken down by server, are as follows:

NWS Operational FTP Server
The GFS data are currently located under the following location:

ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/SL.us008001/ST.opnl

there are four sub-directories that point to the GFS data, these are:

MT.avn_CY.00
MT.avn_CY.06
MT.avn_CY.12
MT.avn_CY.18

Phase 1 -- On 14 June 2004 the following sub-directories will be added which point to the data in the above locations:

MT.gfs_CY.00
MT.gfs_CY.06
MT.gfs_CY.12
MT.gfs_CY.18

Phase 2 -- NET 1 January 2005, the MT.avn_CY.{CC} directories will be removed.

NCEP FTP Server
The GFS data are currently located under the following location:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/avn/prod

the data are stored under a sub-directory named with the current date as follows:

avn.{YYYYMMDD}

where YYMMDD is the current date.  Under this directory are a series of files that are named:

1. gblav.t{CC}z.bf[FF}
2. gblav.t{CC}z.bufrsnd.tar.gz
3. gblav.t{CC}z.pgrb2f{FF}
4. gblav.t{CC}z.pgrbf{FFF}
5. gblav.t{CC}z.pgrbif{FFF}
6. gblav.t{CC}z.sf{FFF}
7. gblav.t{CC}z.sfluxgrbf{FFF}
8. gblav.t{CC}z.updated.status.tm00.bufr_d
9. gblav_grb211.t{CC}z.pgrbf{FFF}

where CC is the model cycle time (00, 06, 12, or 18) and FF and FFF are the forecast hours.

Phase 1 --  On 15 June 2004 you will also be able to access the same GFS data from the following location:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod

the data will be stored under a sub-directory named with the current date as follows:

gfs.{YYYYMMDD}

Under this directory the above files will be renamed as follows:

1. gfs.t{CC}z.bf[FF}
2. gfs.t{CC}z.bufrsnd.tar.gz
3. gfs.t{CC}z.pgrb2f{FF}
4. gfs.t{CC}z.pgrbf{FFF}
5. gfs.t{CC}z.pgrbif{FFF}
6. gfs.t{CC}z.sf{FFF}
7. gfs.t{CC}z.sfluxgrbf{FFF}
8. gfs.t{CC}z.updated.status.tm00.bufr_d
9. gfs_grb211.t{CC}z.pgrbf{FFF}

User should begin to migrate their processing to point to these data at this time.

Phase 2 -- NET 1 January 2005 GFS data in the following directories:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/avn/prod/avn.{YYYYMMDD}

will no longer be available.  Users should have mirgrated their processing to point to the following directories:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/gfs.{YYYYMMDD}
