AVN/GFS and Eta/NAM Renaming
and its effect on data locations on NCEP and NWS FTP servers

NCEP is currently in the process of renaming both its AVN and Eta forecast models to better reflect the functions of these models. The AVN model is being renamed to the GFS (Global Forecast System) and the Eta model is being renamed to NAM (North American Mesoscale). This renaming process will be complete once NCEP Central Operations (NCO) begins operational processing on Phase II of its Central Computing System (CCS) in Gaithersburg, MD. The date for this event is currently scheduled for Tuesday, January 25, 2005.

To accomodate these name changes, NCO will be changing the names of several other files and directories on its CCS to streamline how data are stored on the CCS. All of these changes will create noticable differences in the locations and names of files on both the NCEP and NWS FTP servers. NCEP is currently providing data with the new names and locations on its FTP server and the NWS FTP server. Users of these servers should transistion their processing that downloads data from these servers to the new names and directories as soon as possible. On Tuesday, 25 January 2005, the data sets with the old names and directory structures will no longer exist.

Please use the following information below to aid in your transistion to the new file names and directory locations.

NWS Operational FTP Server

Users of NCEP AVN/GFS and Eta/NAM forecast data need to make the following changes as soon as possible. For data sets accessed under:

ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/SL.us008001/ST.opnl (Operational data location)

and

ftp://tgftp.nws.noaa.gov/SL.us008001/ST.opnt (Test data location)

1. The AVN/GFS data are changing as follows:

NCEP FTP Server

As the directory structure on the NCEP FTP server more closly mirrors that on the NCEP CCS, users who access data from this server will have to make more modifications to their download processing than users who access the NWS server. Users need to make the following changes as soon as possible.

I AVN/GFS

1. Old directory:

The FNL or Final run of the GFS model is being renamed to GDAS (Global Data Assimilation System). This creates the following changes on the NCEP ftp server:

New directory:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/gfs/prod/gdas.{YYYYMMDD}

There are no file name changes associated with this directory name change.

2. Old directory:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/nawips/prod/fnl.{YYYYMMDD}/meta

New directory:

ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/nawips/prod/gdas.{YYYYMMDD}/meta

Under the GDAS directory structure files are being renamed as follows:

IV EDAS/NDAS

The EDAS (Eta Data Assimilation System) is being renamed to NDAS (NAM Data Assimilation System). This creates the following changes on the NCEP FTP server:

VI NCEPBK

The following directories and files will be renamed/moved to accomodate the changes on the NCEP CCS related to nccf_backup files.
