Discussion:
On January 12, 2005, the Callaway and Wolf Creek licensees notified the NRC Operations Center (EN 41326 and EN 41327) of incorrectly connected piping in the halon fire suppression systems at both facilities. The actuation lines to the manual-pneumatic actuators in the halon systems in five of six fire areas were found to be reversed. The licensee contacted the vendor and confirmed that the halon banks may not have discharged as required with the lines reversed. The actuation lines were reconnected in the proper configuration and all systems returned to a functional condition.
The regional offices are in the process of ensuring their respective licensees are aware of the issue and are assessing the extent of condition. As of January 19, similar incorrect halon piping issues have been identified at Limerick Unit 2, Pilgrim, and South Texas Project.
