As an individual who owns his own domain/mail server, I have watched with intrigue as companies comply with the act. In 72 days since the law went into effect, the volume of SPAM messages has stayed the same or increased. These are the "Make money fast...", "Viagra...", "Saw you in Church..." type messages, being sent by people who have no interest in complying with the law in any way. I also can see SPAM being directed towards e-mail addresses that have never been valid, along with forging of messages (two recent viruses made attempts at every user on the system, claming to be the system administrator) The opt-out mechanisim does not work, as most of these messages do not have the opt-out information to begin with. The CAN-SPAM Act is a good beginning, but look to the example California passed (but wasn't able to put into effect) as to what really is needed.
