Abstract |
While returning from tanker escort duty in the Persian Gulf on April 14, 1988, the guided missile frigate, USS SAMUEL B. ROBERTS (FFG- 58), struck an underwater mine below the main engine room. The resulting blast destroyed the main engine room and main propulsion equipment, bent the ship's hull and cracked the superstructure in several places above the damaged engine room. This paper addresses the preparations for and the execution of the major repairs to restore the hull and machinery alignment using innovative repair techniques. The authors believe these techniques may yield potential applications for other marine repair situations. |
