5/25/07 Panama City, Florida

This incident occurred on May 25 when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 121.5 MHz distress signal 55 NM southwest of Panama City, Florida. The operator of the Sailing Vessel Tempus activated the vessel’s EPIRB when problems were encountered with the engine and sails. Coast Guard District 8 launched an aircraft, which located the  distressed vessel. Coast Guard also sent a cutter which assisted the vessel with repairs to the sails and stayed with the sailing vessel until the commercial salvage arrived.

5/23/07 Washington, Missouri

The fourth incident was on May 23 when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 121.5 MHz signal at the Washington Memorial Airport, Washington, Missouri.  The AFRCC received the SARSAT alert and relayed the information to the Missouri  Civil Air Patrol (CAP).  The CAP located a crashed Cessna 421. The CAP assisted the pilot.

5/20/07 Charleston Harbor, South Carolina

The third incident was on May 20 when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 15 NM northeast of Charleston harbor, South Carolina. Coast Guard District 7 received the SARSAT alert when a pleasure craft ran out of fuel.  The Coast Guard launched a helicopter from Charleston and issued an urgent marine information broadcast. Coast Guard Station Charleston sent a small boat to monitor the disabled vessel until they were relieved by Tow Boat US. Tow Boat US towed the disabled vessel back to Charleston.

5/18/07 Beaufort, North Carolina

The second  incident was on May 18 when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 20 NM east of Beaufort, North Carolina.  Earlier the owner/operator of the Sailing Vessel Sea Fever sent out a Mayday when the vessel began taking on water. Coast Guard Lantarea RCC contacted the Sea Fever and asked them to activate their 406 MHz EPIRB to assist in locating their vessel. The SARSAT location was passed to vessels in the area including a Sea Tow commercial vessel and a Navy vessel. The Coast Guard launched a 41 foot boat and the Navy vessel launched a helicopter, which lowered a pump to the disabled vessel. Crews from the Navy vessel and the Sea Tow boarded the Sea Fever and assisted the three crewmen with controlling the flooding. The Sea Tow vessel towed the Sea Fever into port.

5/10/07 Winnebago, Wisconsin

This first incident occurred on May 10 but was confirmed last week. The COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 121.5 MHz distress signal 2 NM northeast of Winnebago, Wisconsin, when a seaplane, N424V, with one person on board crashed in Lake Winnebago. The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center passed the SARSAT position to the Wisconsin CAP. The Wisconsin CAP located the crash and the pilot. The pilot suffered minor injuries.

5/13/07 Ocean Beach, California

The second incident was on May 13 when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 0.5 NM north of Ocean Beach, California. The distress beacon activated when the sailing vessel Bodega Jack hit the breakwater jetty. A Sea Tow vessel towed the disabled vessel into port. There were no injuries.

5/12/07 Saipan

The first incident occurred on May 12 when the COSPAS-SARSAT system detected a 406 MHz distress signal 70 NM west of Saipan. The 93 foot passenger/cargo vessel, the M/V Haurosi, with five persons on board, experienced a crippling engine room fire.  Although the crew was able to extinguish the fire, they could not make repairs and the vessel was disabled.  A U.S. Navy helicopter and the USNS Shasta were deployed to the scene. Using the location data provided in the SARSAT alert, the Navy helicopter rapidly located the disabled vessel despite the fact that the vessel had no lights and there was no moonlight to assist the search.  All five persons were rescued with no injuries. The USNS Shasta towed the disabled vessel to Saipan.

5/9/07 Key West, Florida

Coast Guard District 7 launched an Air Station Miami helicopter and the Cutter Sitkinak. The aircraft and cutter arrived on the scene about the same time and confirmed the vessel was disabled with four sea sick people aboard. The cutter towed the disabled vessel to a rendezvous point where commercial salvage took over and completed the tow to Key West.

5/8/07 Bermuda

The distress beacon was activated when the French Sailing Vessel Oxygene became disabled. A merchant vessel , the Asian Spirit, was diverted to the scene and recovered the two people.

5/7/07 Dry Tortugas, Florida

The crew of the Sailing Vessel Stay Away activated their distress beacon because of engine failure. Coast Guard District 7 launched a fixed wing aircraft and the USCG Cutter Kodiak Island to the scene. When the Kodiak Island arrived on scene it took the disabled sailing vessel under tow. Later a Tow Boat US vessel took over and towed the vessel safely to Key West.

5/7/07 Cape Stable, Florida

The crew of the Fishing Vessel Swardzey activated their distress beacon when they ran out of gas.  Coast Guard District 7 launched a helicopter from Air Station Miami. The crew of the helicopter located the disabled vessel and dropped a radio to the vessel.  The crew of the vessel informed the helicopter that they would wait for commercial salvage.

5/7/07 Cape Fear, North Carolina

The Sailing Vessel Illusion lost its steering and all battery power and the life raft was blown overboard.  Coast Guard Lantarea Rescue Coordination Center diverted a helicopter to the scene. The crew of the helicopter hoisted the three people aboard. The three people were transported to Morehead City, North Carolina.

5/7/07 Cape Hatteras, North Carolina

The Coast Guard Lantarea Rescue Coordination Center received the alert and launched a fixed wing aircraft to the SARSAT position. The crew of the aircraft located a make shift raft with three people aboard.
who had abandoned the Sailing Vessel Lou Pantai.  Weather conditions in the area were poor with wind gusts of 64 miles/hour and waves over 38 feet. Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter to the scene. The crew of helicopter hoisted the three people aboard. The three survivors suffered from mild hypothermia and one had a possible rib fracture. The rescue swimmer suffered back spasms. All were transported to Cherry Point, North Carolina for medical attention.

5/1/07 Bahamas

Coast Guard District 7 received the SARSAT alert when a PLB was activated by two divers as their boat had drifted from their position. Coast Guard launched a helicopter to the scene. The crew of the helicopter located the two divers and requested assistance from a nearby Good Samaritan vessel. The Good Samaritan vessel recovered the two divers and transported them back to their vessel.
