Seismicity Report for Northern California, the Nation, and the World for the week of August 27 - September 3, 1997 Stephen R. Walter U.S. Geological Survey 345 Middlefield Rd. MS-977, Menlo Park, CA 94025 San Francisco Bay Area During the eight-day period ending at midnight on Wednesday, September 3, 1997 the U.S. Geological Survey office in Menlo Park recorded 37 earthquakes of magnitude one (M1) and greater within the San Francisco Bay area shown in Figure 1. Only two were as large as M2.0. This total compares to 21 earthquakes during the prior six-day period (August 21 - 26), five of which were as large as M2. The only activity of note in the Bay Area was a small cluster of earthquakes about four miles northeast of San Leandro (#1/1). The activity occurred east of the Hayward fault over a four-day period. It consisted of eight earthquakes larger than M1.0. Only one was larger than M2.0, a M2.9 late Saturday afternoon that was felt in the local area. The only other earthquake as large as M2 was a M2.3 early Wednesday afternoon on the Loma Prieta segment of the San Andreas fault about seven miles southeast of Los Gatos (#2/1). Northern & Central California The week's largest earthquake occurred in northwestern Nevada about 12 miles northwest of Andy's Place (#4/2). The next largest quake also occurred outside the state boundaries: a M3.1 last Friday evening on the Mendocino transform fault about 110 miles west of Petrolia (#5/2). Other events in the Cape Mendocino area included five M2 earthquakes, the largest a M2.5 that occurred last Saturday morning about three miles southwest of Petrolia (#3/2). Other earthquakes in northern California included a M2.0 last Thursday evening about seven miles north of Redding (#2/2) and a M2.7 Sunday night about nine miles southwest of Cottonwood (#7/2). Coincident with the Cottonwood earthquake was a M2.3 along the coast about 15 miles northeast of Point Arena (#6/2). The week began and ended with M2 events on the San Andreas north of the Pinnacles National Monument (#1/2). To the northeast of these events a trio of M2's occurred within about a one hour period on Monday morning (#8/2). Activity in the Sierra Nevada range was limited to a M2.4 in the southern range about 13 miles northeast of Lake Isabella, a M2.3 on the state border east of Mono Lake, and a M2.4 in the northern range about 19 miles southwest of Truckee (#9/2). Long Valley Caldera Only one earthquake as large as M2 occurred within the caldera during the week: a M2.0 that occurred south of the airport early Saturday morning (#1/3). South of the caldera a four M2 events occurred south and east of Mt. Morrison (#2,#3,#4/3). USA Seismicity (August 25 - September 4) Montana appeared to be the seismic hot spot during the past week with four M3 earthquakes occurring along its western and southern borders. First was a M3.4 early Friday morning in the northwest corner of the state that was felt in the town of Troy (#1/4). An hour later a M3.7 occurred along the southern Montana/Idaho border (#2/4). On Saturday a M3.7 occurred in the Hebgen Lake area (#3/4) and on sunday a M3.4 occurred just across the border in the Yellowstone area (#5/4). The Planet Earth (August 25 - September 4) The largest earthquake on the planet was a M6.8 near the north coast of Papua New Guinea (#2/5). Slightly smaller was a M6.4 beneath western Colombia that was felt throughout much of the country, most strongly in the cities of Armenia, Bogota, Cali, Medellin, and Manizales (#3/5). Other large earthquakes recorded included a M6.3 in the Tonga Islands area (#1/5), a M6.0 on the Pacific-Antarctic ridge (#4/5), and a M6.1 south of the Fiji Islands (#5/5). Table 1. N RD: is the number of readings used to locate the event. N S: is the number of S waves in N RD. RMS SEC: is the root mean squared residual misfit for the location is seconds, the lower the better, over 0.3 to 0.5 seconds is getting bad, but this is machine, not hand timed, data. ERH: is the estimated horizontal error in kilometers. ERZ: is the estimated vertical error in kilometers. N FM: is the number of readings used to compute the magnitude. REMKS: obtuse region codes that denote the velocity model used to locate the event. DUR MAG: is the magnitude as determined from the duration of the seismograms, not the amplitude. Sort of like going to echo canyon and measuring how loud your yell is by counting echos. FIG: denotes the figure/event number in the maps posted separately.
