China (Nanjing) International Exhibition of New Products 2004

U.S. companies who are interested to develop new relationships and promote their products in Jiangsu Province, China may be interested to participate in the China Nanjing International Exhibition of New Products in April of 2004.

The City of Nanjing is working hard to promote the show, which will focus on four key areas, including health/medical devices, environmental technologies, bio-tech, and electronics.

This show is in its first year, so U.S. firms that participate will likely gain significant attention from local government authorities and supporting organizations. The Commercial Service in Shanghai would like to leverage this show to develop a stronger foundation for U.S. firms to find markets in the region. The Commercial Service plans to support a U.S. pavilion with an environmental focus and will facilitate introductions of key environmental and planning officials to U.S. exhibitors at the show.

U.S. Pavilion ConceptIn a recent meeting with Jiangsu leaders, the Commercial Service Shanghai office learned that this show is intended to emphasize imported products, including the latest technologies from abroad. Show organizers see this show is an important step in the continued integration of the Yangtze River Delta regional economy.

Recently the Central Government in Beijing has put pressure on provincial and municipal governments in the region to strengthen economic cooperation between cities in the region. Cities such as Nanjing also hope to ride the wave of investment and infrastructure development resulting from nearby Shanghai’s hosting of the World Expo in 2010.

This new regional initiative, the Yangzte River Regional Development Plan, includes a 400km corridor along the Yangtze River between Shanghai and Nanjing, including Nantong, Changzhou, Zhenjiang and other areas along the river. It has been compared it to the investment in Pudong, in terms of government attention, investment policies and development strategy.

Business in Jiangsu at a Glance:

Jiangsu Province is one of the most economically vibrant provinces in China. With 73.8 million people, Jiangsu is also China’s fifth most populous province. GDP per capita in 2002 reached US$1743, ranked fifth in China. Jiangsu’s 11.6% growth rate in 2002 is the third fastest of all provinces, autonomous regions, and province-level cities. In the first half year of 2003, Jiangsu registered $66.1 billion in GDP output, up 13% from the same time last year. One-tenth of the public companies on the Chinese stock exchanges are from Jiangsu. Jiangsu’s most affluent cities are concentrated along the Shanghai-Nanjing corridor (Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and Nanjing), while areas north of the Yangtze tend to be less developed.

Jiangsu’s foreign trade hit $47.4 billion in the first six months of 2003, accounting for 12.6% of national total. Exports reached $24.5 billion, up 48.2% to the same time last year and accounting for 12.9% of China’s total, while imports reached $22.9 billion, equal to 12.3% of national total. Trade volume hit third after Guangdong and Shanghai in China last year.

More than 34,000 joint ventures and solely foreign-funded companies, including 110 of Fortune 500, have invested in various industrial sectors in Jiangsu. Jiangsu was voted the top investment destination for Taiwan businesses in a Taiwan trade publication last year. Realized FDI in the first half year of 2003 was $7.42 billion, up 70.5% from the previous year, accounting for 24.5% of China’s total, ranking the first in the country.

Environmental Technologies and Sustainable Development Initiatives:

A sub theme for the Yangzte River Regional Development Plan is sustainable development. The China Nanjing Exhibition of New Products therefore hopes to prominently feature energy efficient products, environmental technologies, “green” appliances and other products that contribute toward sustainable development. Due to the rapid industrial expansion in the region, and the growing pressures on land and water resources, environmental technologies, resource recovery, recycling, energy efficient technologies and large scale urban planning are key areas in which U.S. exporters can find opportunities in this region.
