Pleasure Boaters Receive Enhancements to Assist Their Arrival From Foreign Ports

(Friday, June 16, 2006)

contacts for this news release

Miami, FL – U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is making it easier for South Florida’s pleasure boaters to comply with federal regulations by providing additional locations to comply with the face-to-face reporting requirement and by providing the Latitude and Longitude, in addition to the street address, of these reporting facilities so boaters may use their Global Positioning Systems (GPS) to navigate their way, by sea or land, to the most convenient location.

NOTE: The names of each facility along with the latitude and longitude, street addresses, phone numbers, and hours of operations for reporting a vessels arriving to U.S. Customs and Border Protection are listed at the end of this release.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection has implemented revised clearance procedures for pleasure boats arriving into the United States from foreign. The new pleasure boat clearance procedures are part of CBP’s comprehensive efforts to improve security at our nation’s borders while enhancing and facilitating legitimate travel, including pleasure boating.

South Florida ranks as one of the most active areas in the nation for pleasure boating traffic and during this summer’s boating season, CBP will be staffing the marinas listed below on a part time basis as designated reporting locations to enhance the pleasure boater’s ability to comply with Federal regulations that require all persons, U.S. Citizens and aliens, seeking entry into the United States report their arrival. Masters of a vessel must report their arrival to CBP after having been at any foreign port or place or after having contact with any hovering vessel.

Effective May 28th, CBP officers began staffing the marinas listed below every Sunday and Monday and will continue to staff them until the end of the Labor Day weekend. CBP officers will also staff these marinas, each Tuesday following the holiday weekends of Memorial Day, Fourth of July, and Labor Day.

Also new this boating season, CBP has added additional facilities to comply with the face-to-face inspection requirement. These facilities are to be used after one obtains a clearance number from CBP. Boaters arriving outside the operating hours of the reporting locations will adhere to current procedures where they will call one of the following toll-free numbers (1-800-432-1216, 1-800-451-0393) to report their arrival then report in person within 24 hours to the closest port of entry or facility listed below.

CBP will make every attempt to accommodate large regatta groups arriving from foreign with multiple vessels. Please contact the nearest CBP Port of Entry in advance to request on site clearance.
