Evaluation and development of management strategies designed to reduce economic losses due to nematodes attacking vegetable crops. AP: Evaluate cover crops in rotation with tomatoes in an effort to suppress nematodespecies attacking tomato. Study the relationship of mulching and irrigation methods to nematode survival and development. Evaluate efficacy of fumigants and "contact" nematicides applied by various methods on vegetable fields. Develop systems for population management which would be compatible with the full-bed mulch concept physically, environmentally and economically. Establish relationship of nematodes to solarization, crop rotation, and multicropping in-row culture. PR: 8910 TO 9009 Yields of strawberry or tomato on full-bed plastic mulch culture following solarization of sandy soil fields approximate yields on chemically fumigated soil. Nematicides (metam sodium, methylbromide) applied via drip irrigation prior to second crops following tomato crops initially fumigated with methylbromide/chloropicrin mixtures have improved yield of second crops. Post-plant applications of oxamyl or phenamiphos via drip irrigation enhance second crop performance on nematode infested soil. Use of the liquid fertilizer wheel to apply metam sodium has also proven useful for second crops on full-bed plastic mulch, killing the stubble of the initial crop and reducing nematodes and weeds in a narrow band for the second crop.
