Olympic Emblem Design Hits 2nd Phase
(China Daily - Liu Li - 10/12/2002)

The Beijing Organizing Committee for the 2008 Olympic Games received 1,994 design submissions for the Games' emblem by last Tuesday, when the three-month competition for the emblem designs for the 2008 Olympics ended.

The competition is expected to enter the second stage on Monday, involving experts' appraisals, vice-president of the committee, Jiang Xiaoyu, announced yesterday at a press conference.

Nearly 89 per cent of the designs, 1,766 of the 1,994 total, are local submissions (including the Chinese mainland, Taiwan Province, and the Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions), according to Jiang.

Foreign designers from Asia, Europe, America and Oceania also took an active part in the competition, submitting 228 designs.

Among the overseas competitors are some of the world's top design companies that have taken part in designing the emblems for the 1996 and 2000 summer Olympics, the 1998 and 2002 winter Olympics and the 2002 World Cup, according to Jiang.

Jiang declined to reveal the names of the design companies in order to guarantee fairness in the upcoming competition.

The final emblem for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games will be announced in April next year, after first being approved by the International Olympic Committee Executive Board in December.

Before that, a special experts review committee consisting of seven members from home and four from abroad will hold a two-phase appraisal.

BDPC Continues Preparations for Ownership Tenders
(10/17/2002 - Beijing Development & Planning Commission)

On September 20, 2002 the "Beijing Olympic Green, Area B Sports Venues & Affiliated Facilities Presentation of Projects Ownership Tendering" was held in the Beijing International Hotel. The event was organized by the Development Planning Commission of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality (BDPC). The information presented at the event was "unofficial" and meant only to be a preview of the upcoming ownership tenders. Only recently, has the information presented been made public.

The session was presided by Mr. Shen Baochang, Director, Ms. Wu Guiying, Vice Director and Mr. Liu Zhi, Vice Director. Mr. Shen and Mr. Liu both made presentations and later answered many questions raised by the public. The BDPC distributed a brochure as well as a CD ROM. Copies of the "unofficial" information presented can be found in PDF format on the Olympics section of the U.S. Commercial Service website http://www.buyusa.gov/china/en/olympics.html.

Adjustments to the schedule for the ownership tenders have been constant, but the most updated timeline shows the tender process in two steps: first a "pre-qualification - call for expression of interest" (documents expected to be available October 28th), and a full tender for selected groups (late January 2003). The pre-qualified parties will have more time to prepare their offer, with a deadline for proposals expected to be around July 1, 2003.
Comments, suggestions, and questions on the Ownership Tenders can be directed to Gilbert Van Kerckhove, who is a Delegate for the Beijing Development Planning Commission on Beijing's Olympic projects.
