FTC reviewers: Attached you will find information on a P2P technology called LionShare being developed at Penn State with partners at MIT, Simon Fraser University and Internet2. The White Paper being submitted to the FTC describes an the architecture for a secure P2P file sharing technology that encourages responsible file-sharing. Additionally, LionShare provide an platform that will do a number of other things including federated search of other learning object repositories, help individuals and groups organize and share academic materials, the creation of automated metadata, as well as, as support a rich environment for academic collaboration. This platform is extensible and will likely be used for a variety of other purposes beyond the original intent. As project director LionShare, I can tell you the interest has been overwhelming from both the business and academic sectors in this project. This includes a strong interest from the international community. As many researchers are starting to recognize, P2P computing architectures have the potential to revolutionize the way individuals and groups share and communicate. Recent work in the academic community in areas such as grid comuting, learning technology and social networks suggest a bright future for these technologies in academia and beyond. At least 3 major international conferences promoting P2P research findings have been held in the last 12 months. I would encourage you to look closely at the potential of technologies such as LionShare that seek to create tools that encourage the responsible use of P2P technologies. These technologies offer an exciting opportunity for innovation and provide a platform for considerable future commerce.
