Annotation: This working paper of Canada's Special Committee on Pornography and Prostitution, appointed to review Canada's criminal code in these areas, examines legislation, police policies and practices, social policies, and public opinion on pornography and prostitution in Denmark, France, West Germany, the Netherlands, and Sweden.
Abstract: Information for the report was obtained through questionnaires completed by persons in each country known to be knowledgeable in the subject areas. Respondents were asked to base their information on government documents, crime statistics, and research reports. The report devotes separate chapters to each of the countries. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction to the constitutional and legal structure of the country. A historical overview of legislation and jurisprudence on pornography and prostitution is then presented, followed by a discussion of the extent and nature of law enforcement problems in addressing these issues. When available, crime statistics depict the situation. The review of each country concludes with an examination of public attitudes toward government policies addressing pornography and prostitution, with particular attention to the views of the women's movement. Current policy trends are portrayed. The report summarizes the European experience with pornography and prostitution. Appended questionnaire and chapter references.
