Project Gutenberg is an effort to enhance literacy through the free distribution on electronic books or eBooks. It is one of the first online content projects, started in 1971. Project Gutenberg is enthusiastic and supportive of the use of p2p software for distribution of our eBooks. In support of this, we offer a p2p download link via the MagnetLinks protocol on our search page at http://gutenberg.net. The content of Project Gutenberg is nearly all in the public domain in the US, and even our copyrighted content may be freely redistributed for non-commercial use. By sharing Project Gutenberg eBooks via p2p networks, readers will help other readers to find content of interest. The benefits of p2p for distributing Project Gutenberg content are that they allow individual readers to add value to the content before redistributing. (We note that there are some limitations on whether the Project Gutenberg trademark may be used with such modified copies, but that otherwise the public domain status makes such modifications, redistributions and derivative works perfectly legitimate.) Added value might be as simple as putting a small collection of eBooks together ("my favorite stories"), or as complex as creating a brand new literary work that is based on existing public domain works. Project Gutenberg encourages the free sharing of public domain content and, when licensing allows (i.e., creative commons licenses, GPL, etc.) copyrighted content. Project Gutenberg offers over 150GB of content in nearly 100,000 files, representing over 14,000 unique titles. We offer books in dozens of languages and many different formats. Because these materials are not content (that is, they are not computer programs, and do not contain macros or other executable content), they are safe and benign to transfer. Free literature can help to enhance literacy (by providing fun books to read), can entertain and englighten, and can be used in the creation of new works. Project Gutenberg is supportive of p2p and all other means to work toward our mission of generating and distributing literature in electronic form.
