HIV infection is becoming a serious medical problem in Russia. There is a dramatic increase in number of HIV-infected individuals in this country. The prevalence of HIV in St. Petersburg has increased from 2.3 per 100000 in 1998 to 215.6 per 100000 in 2001. More that 90% of these HIV-infected persons are intravenous drug users. Last year there was increase of HIV seroprevalence in general population. The goal of this study is to evaluate of HIV seroincidence among paid blood and plasma donors in St. Petersburg, Russia. HIV seroincidence among blood and plasma donors (n=2498119) were assessed from 1987 to 2002. All donors were tested in anti-HIV enzyme immunoassay (EIA). Anti-HIV EIA-reactive donors were tested in Western blot. Since 1987 were registered 112 HIV-infected individuals among paid blood and plasma donors. The seroincidence of HIV among donors was 2.0 per 100000 donors tested for HIV in 1998, 1.90 per 100000 in 1999, 21.3 per 100000 in 2000, 46.2 per 100000 in 2001, and 60.8 in 2002. Since 1987 there were 14 cases of blood and plasma transfusions from HIV-infected donors. All these donors were in enzyme immunoassay-indeterminate a window-period. During this period only one recipient becomes HIV-infected in 2001. The findings provide the direct evidence of a substantial increase in HIV-incidence among paid blood and plasma donors in St. Petersburg, Russia, within the last 3 years.
