Representative George Miller Joins Democratic Colleagues to Release "Real Security" Plan

Wednesday, March 29, 2006

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Representative George Miller (D-Martinez) announced his support for the Democratic Plan for Real Security, which was unveiled earlier today by House and Senate Democratic leaders, General Wesley Clark, and former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright at an event near the U.S. Capitol.

“I think it is critical that as a nation we embrace these measures to make American safer,” said Miller. “It is my first responsibility as a public servant to ensure the security all Americans in this era of unpredictable threats and challenges.

“As we saw in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the Bush Administration’s incompetence and cronyism has left America dangerously unprepared to respond to a natural disaster or terrorist attack. The Republicans’ security rhetoric just doesn’t match reality,” Representative Miller continued. “Whether it’s under-funding homeland security or short-changing our troops, Republicans have not made California and the nation as safe as we should be.”

The Democratic plan would:

  • Double the number of Special Forces and increase human intelligence capabilities; secure by 2010 loose nuclear materials; stop nuclear weapons programs in Iran and North Korea.

  • Rebuild a state-of-the-art military able to project power to protect America; guarantee our troops the equipment they need; fully man and train the National Guard; enact a GI Bill of Rights and fully fund veterans’ health care and benefits.

  • Increase America’s security and honor our troops in Iraq, and ensure that 2006 is a year of significant transition with Iraqis assuming primary responsibility for their country and the responsible redeployment of U.S. forces. We will hold the Bush Administration accountable for manipulated pre-war intelligence, poor planning, and contracting scandals.

  • Implement all of the 9/11 Commission recommendations; improve border security; invest in mass transit security; fully man, train, and equip first responders; screen 100 percent of containers bound for U.S.; and prevent outsourcing of American security at our ports and airports.

  • Work to free America from dependence on Middle East oil by achieving energy independence by 2020. The plan calls for increased investment in developing and producing alternate fuels from our country’s heartland; promoting hybrid & flex fuel cars; and enhancing energy efficiency.
