harkin: congress on record for need to change course in iraq

WASHINGTON D.C. ---- Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA) today released the following statement on the provision to change course in Iraq contained in the Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act:

"With the Senate vote today, both houses of Congress are on record for the need to drastically change course in Iraq and begin shifting our troops out of the civil war.

"At the same time, until we are able to redeploy our brave young men and women, we need to ensure they have the resources they need to protect themselves. For that reason, we must move this bill forward quickly. Congress must stand by its pledge to protect our troops in the field.

"I am hopeful the Senate will vote on final passage this week. At that point I urge the President to sign this bill into law, heed the voice of Congress and the American people, and begin working in a bipartisan way to find a diplomatic solution to the situation in Iraq."
