FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- March 12, 2009 -- Chocolate Chewies, Inc., of Eugene, OR is recalling Baba Joon’s Peanut Chocolate Chewie cookies, because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The cookies were manufactured using peanut products recalled by Peanut Corporation of America because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.
Peanut Chocolate Chewies were distributed in Eugene, OR; Newtown, CT; East Meadow, NY; and Coral Springs, FL. via internet sales and wholesale orders. The product was packaged in either heat-sealed cello bags, 5 cookies per bag, or in transparent plastic boxes containing 20-25 loose cookies. The products do not have a UPC or lot codes. The bags and boxes were labeled “Baba Joon’s Chocolate Chewies,” “Peanut.” The cookies are no longer available for sale.
