Boost for Life on Jupiter Moon

Using images captured by the Galileo spacecraft, Dr. Richard Greenberg of the University of Arizona has estimated that Europa’s icy crust may be thinner than previously believed. The ice layer may also contain cracks that expose Europa’s possible subsurface ocean to heat, organic matter from asteroid/comet impacts, and other chemicals beneficial to life. Other scientists have suggested that sulfur ejected from another Jovian moon, Io, could potentially reach Europa and help support life in the icy moon’s ocean. Greenberg believes that the waters of Europa may more closely resemble Earth’s Arctic Ocean than Lake Vostok in Antarctica. Lake Vostok is a body of fresh water buried deep below the ice of Antarctica and isolated from the surface. It's oftentimes been viewed as an analogue for ice-covered oceans elsewhere in the solar system. But the cracks in the ice covering the Arctic Ocean permit an exchange of material between surface and sea. NASA is currently considering future robotic missions to Europa that could help determine if the moon harbors life.
