Abstract:

This coverage provides species richness data by EMAP hexagon. It measures the total number of species in a taxonomic group predicted to occur in each hexagon. Measures of species richness are simple, straight-forward assessments of the diversity of wildlife within a given area. Although species richness does not account for species composition and the accuracy of richness measures have many inherent shortcomings, the richness data are useful for characterizing regional biological diversity and for assessing the relative contribution of a proposed area. However, caution is needed in their interpretation.

Purpose:

The purpose of the GAP species maps is to provide more precise information about the current predicted distribution of individual native species within their general ranges.
