Abstract There has recently been a tendency to use inertia energy storers on transport equipment. When designing inertia storers using flywheels of the types described it is necessary to know the gyroscopic effect of the flywheels on the machine which is to use the storer. The characteristics of a machine usually include the maximum reserve of energy in the storer and the diameter of the flywheel; thus, depending on the type chosen, the kinematic moment of the flywheel, even for the same specific energy capacity and diameter, will be different. The kinetic moment of the flywheel is the basic characteristic of its gyroscopic effect on the machine since the requirements on the manoeuverability of the machine and thus on its angular velocity in turning in different planes must not vary depending on the type of flywheel used. Thus if the angular velocity of the machine is constant, the kinetic moment can be taken as sole characteristic of the gyroscopic effect of the flywheel on the machine in any type of bearings (rigid, elastic, visco-elastic). Different types of flywheels with the same specific energy capacity and diameter have different kinetic moments since the moment of inertia and angular velocity both vary. The gyroscopic moment for flywheels of various shapes and made from different materials on moving machines can be calculated from the graph developed in this article. An example is given of the determination of the gyroscopic effect of the different types of flywheels with the same energy capacity and with radius lm.
