Secretary to Send Off Cultural Delegation to India

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton will send off Martin Luther King, III, U.S. Representative John Lewis, U.S. Representative Spencer Bachus, and Herbie Hancock on their cultural delegation to India on February 12, 2009 to commemorate the tour by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. 50 years ago to study the life and works of Mahatma Gandhi. The delegation will begin in New Delhi and travel around India to some of the principal sites associated with Gandhi’s work. Dr. King and his wife, Coretta Scott King, travelled to India in 1959. Upon their return to the United States, Dr. King and other leaders of the civil rights movement drew on Gandhi’s ideas to transform American society. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton will meet with Martin Luther King, III, Congressman Lewis, Congressman Bachus, and Herbie Hancock on February 12, at 2:30 p.m. There will be brief remarks with no questions and answers, and a photo spray at the end of the event.
