PINTAILAKE SERIES


The Pintailake series consists of very deep, very poorly drained soils that formed in alluvium over lacustrine deposits derived from limestone, shale, and quartzite. Pintailake soils are on lake plains. Slopes are 0 to 1 percent. The mean annual precipitation is about 14 inches and the mean annual temperature is about 49 degrees F.

TAXONOMIC CLASS: Fine, mixed, active, calcareous, mesic Typic Endoaquepts

TYPICAL PEDON: Pintailake silt loam--on a southeastern-facing, linear slope of 1 percent under three-square bulrush, wiregrass, and Nebraska sedge at an elevation of 4,220 feet--wildlife habitat. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.)

Oi--0 to 3 inches; black (10YR 2/1) slightly decomposed plant material consisting of roots, leaves, and stems; abrupt wavy boundary. (2 to 5 inches thick)

Ag--3 to 10 inches; light olive gray (5Y 6/2) silt loam, light gray (5Y 7/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky; slightly hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; few coarse, common medium, many very fine, and many fine roots; many very fine and fine tubular pores; 25 percent fine and medium prominent greenish gray (10BG 5/1) zones of iron depletion in the matrix; 27 sodium adsorption ratio; moderately saline (EC 11 mmhos/cm); violently effervescent; 27 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; calcium carbonates disseminated; moderately alkaline (pH 8.3); abrupt smooth boundary. (2 to 7 inches thick)

Bg--10 to 31 inches; pale brown (10YR 6/3) silty clay loam, light gray (10YR 7/2) dry; moderate medium subangular blocky structure parting to moderate fine and very fine subangular blocky; hard, firm, moderately sticky and moderately plastic; common medium, many fine, and many very fine roots; common fine and many very fine tubular pores; common fine and medium distinct light olive gray (5Y 6/2) zones of iron depletion lining pores; few fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; 53 sodium adsorption ratio; strongly saline (EC 53 mmhos/cm); violently effervescent; 24 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; calcium carbonates disseminated; strongly alkaline (pH 8.5); clear smooth boundary. (4 to 21 inches thick)

2BCg--31 to 46 inches; grayish brown (10YR 5/2) silty clay, light brownish gray (10YR 6/2) dry; massive; very hard, firm, moderately sticky and very plastic; few very fine and fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; common fine and medium distinct black (10YR 2/1) masses of manganese accumulation; common fine and medium faint gray (2.5Y 6/1) zones of iron depletion lining pores; common fine and medium prominent yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; 67 sodium adsorption ratio; strongly saline (EC 23 mmhos/cm); violently effervescent; 20 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; calcium carbonates disseminated; moderately alkaline (pH 8.3); clear smooth boundary. 2Cg1--46 to 55 inches; gray (5Y 6/1) silty clay, light gray (5Y 7/1) dry; massive; very hard, very firm, moderately sticky and very plastic; few very fine and fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; many medium and coarse dark yellowish brown (10YR 4/6) and brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) masses of iron accumulation; few fine and medium black (10YR 2/1) masses of manganese accumulation; 66 sodium adsorption ratio; strongly saline (EC 24 mmhos/cm); strongly effervescent; 17 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; calcium carbonates disseminated; moderately alkaline (pH 8.2); clear smooth boundary.

2Cg2--55 to 60 inches; 75 percent greenish gray (5GY 6/1) and 25 percent brown (7.5YR 5/3) silty clay, 75 percent light greenish gray (5GY 7/1) and 25 percent light brown (7.5YR 6/3) dry; very hard, very firm, moderately sticky and very plastic; few very fine roots; few very fine tubular pores; few fine and medium prominent gray (2.5Y 6/1) zones of iron depletion lining pores; few fine and medium prominent black (10YR 2/1) masses of manganese accumulation; common fine and medium prominent brownish yellow (10YR 6/6) and yellowish brown (10YR 5/6) masses of iron accumulation; 76 sodium adsorption ratio; strongly saline (EC 33 mmhos/cm); strongly effervescent; 15 percent calcium carbonate equivalent; calcium carbonates disseminated; moderately alkaline (pH 8.0).

TYPE LOCATION: Box Elder County, Utah; about 0.25 miles north of the northeast shore of Pintail Lake in the state public shooting grounds; approximately 1,900 feet east and 2,400 feet north of the southwest corner of section 21, T. 10 N., R. 4 W.; USGS Public Shooting Grounds 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle; 41 degrees 35 minutes 11.11 seconds north latitude and 112 degrees 18 minutes 28.13 seconds west longitude, NAD83; UTM zone 12N 390993E, 4604681N, NAD83.

RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS:

Soil moisture - Usually wet in part of the moisture control section between March and October; Seasonal periods of aquic moisture regime.

Mean annual soil temperature - 49 to 54 degrees F.

Ochric epipedon thickness - 4 to 12 inches; includes the Oi and Ag horizons.

Depth to base of cambic horizon - 10 to 35 inches.

Depth to redoximorphic features - 3 to 14 inches.

Particle-size control section - Clay content: 35 to 50 percent.

Ag horizon - Hue: 10YR through 5Y.
Value: 4 through 6 moist, 5 through 7 dry.
Chroma: 1 or 2, moist or dry.
Reaction: Moderately alkaline or strongly alkaline.
Salinity (EC): 4 to 12 mmhos/cm.
Sodicity (SAR): 13 to 30.
Calcium carbonate equivalent: 20 to 30 percent.

GEOGRAPHIC SETTING:

Parent material: Alluvium over lacustrine deposits derived from limestone, shale, and quartzite.

Landform: Lake plains.

Slope: 0 to 1 percent.

Elevation: 4,205 to 4,220 feet.

Mean annual temperature: 48 to 52 degrees F.

Mean annual precipitation: 12 to 16 inches.

Wettest months: October to May.

Driest months: June to September.

Frost-free period: 140 to 180 days.

GEOGRAPHICALLY ASSOCIATED SOILS: These are the Saltair, Eimarsh, and Payson soils. Saltair and Eimarsh soils have salic horizons. Payson soils have a natric horizon and occur on lake terraces.

DRAINAGE AND PERMEABILITY: Very poorly drained; high surface runoff; slow permeability (moderately low or moderately high saturated hydraulic conductivity). Endosaturation is present with an apparent seasonal high water table between the soil surface and 0.8 feet (very shallow free water occurrence class) between March and September. Cumulative annual duration class is Persistent. These soils are susceptible to frequent ponding for very long duration from March through October with water up to 0.5 feet deep.

USE AND VEGETATION: Pintailake soils are used for wildlife habitat. Some potential native plants are three-square bulrush, wiregrass, and Nebraska sedge.

DISTRIBUTION AND EXTENT: Northwestern Utah. These soils are not extensive. MLRA 28A.

REMARKS: Diagnostic horizons and features recognized in this pedon are:

Organic soil material - The zone from the soil surface to 3 inches (Oi horizon).

Ochric epipedon - The zone from the soil surface to 10 inches (Oi and Ag horizons).

Cambic horizon - The zone from 10 to 31 inches (Bg horizon).

Aquic conditions - The conditions of endosaturation, reduction, and redoximorphic features between 3 and 60 inches at certain times during normal years (parts of the Ag, Bg, 2BCg, 2Cg1, and 2Cg2 horizons).

Particle-size control section - The zone from 10 to 40 inches (Bg horizon and part of the 2BCg horizon).
