Grizzly Bear with Cubs

Education specialist MacNeil Lyons reports: These photos of a grizzly sow with two cubs of the year (COY) were taken midway along the Glen Creek Trail, between the Bunsen Peak Trailhead and Snow Pass/Fawn Pass Junction. It was the afternoon of Sunday, July 4th, before the hailstorm hit Mammoth and Gardiner. The bear was bedded down or nursing in the open sagebrush, our voices (five total) made her sit up, just 150 yards away. Due to our numbers (five hikers) and her surprise, she watched us for a few moments.... I don't think that she considered us such a threat, as she did not charge, but did get up and move her cubs away from us as we were inside her comfort zone. More on bears.
